Accessing the Virtual Lab (Apporto)
The COD Virtual Lab lets you run academic software in a web browser, on your own laptop, with nothing to install.
⚠️ Virtual Lab access is granted by course or department, it is not automatic. If your program uses it, your instructor or department will have you added. If you sign in and see an empty App Store with no Windows Desktop tile, your account has not been added yet. Contact your instructor first, then the Help Desk.
What you can use it for
The Virtual Lab streams a full Windows desktop to your browser tab. The software is already installed and licensed, so you do not need a powerful computer, and it works the same on Windows, Mac, or Chromebook. Depending on your program, the desktop includes titles such as:
- AutoCAD 2026 and Revit 2026
- SketchUp 2025 and LayOut 2025
- Chief Architect
- Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign
- Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome
⚙️ Before you start: use Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on a stable internet connection. You will sign in with your regular COD account and complete your usual multifactor authentication prompt.
1 · Sign in
- Open a web browser and go to cod.apporto.com
- Click Log in.
- You are redirected to the College of DuPage sign-in page. Sign in with your COD email and password, then approve your multifactor authentication prompt.
2 · Launch the Windows Desktop
After you sign in, the App Store page lists what you have been given access to. Find the Windows Desktop tile and click Launch.
3 · Wait for the desktop to load
A new browser tab or window opens and the desktop starts building. This takes a few moments the first time while your settings are applied. When it finishes, you are looking at a Windows desktop with your course software on it.
The toolbar across the top
That strip belongs to Apporto, not to Windows. It is how you move files and control the session:
- Upload moves a file from your computer into the virtual desktop.
- Download pulls a file from the virtual desktop back to your computer.
- Share screen shares your session view with someone else.
- More holds the extra session options, and the icons on the right show connection quality, sound, help, and settings.
- The expand icon puts the desktop into full screen, which is the most comfortable way to work.
✅ Save your work somewhere it will survive. Before you close the session, use Download to save finished files to your own computer, or save into OneDrive from inside the virtual desktop. Do not leave your only copy sitting on the virtual desktop.
When you are finished
Save and close your files, then sign out of Windows from the Start menu inside the virtual desktop rather than just closing the browser tab. Signing out releases your seat so another student can use it.
If something goes wrong
- The App Store is empty. Your account has not been added to the Virtual Lab yet, or not for that software. Check with your instructor.
- The desktop is slow, blurry, or choppy. Close other tabs and downloads, and try a wired or stronger Wi-Fi connection. If it stays poor, report it and mention the day and time so it can be traced.
- The session will not start, or the tab is blank. Refresh, or close the tab and launch again from the App Store. Pop-up blockers can stop the second tab from opening.
- Sign-in fails or loops. Try a private or incognito window, which rules out a stale session from another account.
⚙️ Apporto is upgrading its platform, so some screens may look a little different from the images above. The steps stay the same.
