Using Zoom as a Student

🎥 Join your instructor's Zoom meetings, use the in-meeting tools, and fix common audio or video problems.
As a College of DuPage student you can join any Zoom meeting set up by your instructor. You do not need a paid Zoom Pro account to attend. This guide shows you how to join, what the in-meeting controls do, and how to fix the issues students hit most often.
🌐 Join Zoom on the web
- Go to zoom.us.
- Click Join a Meeting at the top of the page.
- Enter the Meeting ID your instructor gave you, then click Join.
- Enter the meeting passcode if you are prompted for one.
- Set your audio and video, then click Join Meeting.
💡 Tip: If your instructor sent a meeting link, you can just click that link and skip straight to the join screen. No Meeting ID needed.
💻 Download the Zoom app (optional)
Windows or Mac:
- Visit the Zoom Download Center.
- Click Download for Meetings and follow the installation steps.
- Open Zoom and click Join a Meeting. You do not need to sign in.
Mobile (iPhone or Android):
- Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
- Search for Zoom and install the app.
- Open the app and tap Join a Meeting.
🛠 Common features and how to use them
🎥 Joining a meeting
- Click the meeting link from your instructor, or enter the Meeting ID manually.
- Choose to join with computer audio or dial in by phone.
- Set your microphone and camera before joining.
🖥 In-meeting tools
- Microphone and camera: use the controls at the bottom to mute or unmute and turn video on or off.
- Chat: click Chat to send messages to other participants.
- Raise Hand: click Reactions, then Raise Hand, to ask a question.
- Screen sharing: if the host has enabled it, click Share Screen to present your screen.
🔹 Breakout rooms (if your instructor uses them)
- You will be automatically assigned to a room, or given the option to join manually.
- Click Join when prompted to enter your assigned room.
🧰 Troubleshooting common issues
Can't join a meeting?
- Double-check the Meeting ID and passcode.
- Try a different browser, or download the Zoom app.
- Check your internet connection and restart your device if needed.
No audio, or microphone not working?
- Click the microphone icon and make sure Join Audio by Computer is selected.
- Check your device's microphone settings so Zoom has access.
- Try leaving and rejoining, or switch to a different device.
Camera not working?
- Click the camera icon and select the correct device.
- Make sure no other application is using your camera.
- Restart your device and try a different browser or the Zoom app.
Poor video or audio quality?
- Make sure you have a strong internet connection. Try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router.
- If you are on video, try turning it off to improve audio quality.
- Close other applications running in the background to free up bandwidth.
